Hi, I'm Monique!
I'm originally from the Maritimes and I became a Calgarian by choice when I moved to Sunalta with my late husband Wylie Spicer and my daughter in 2012.
Back east, my personal and professional life was steeped in helping my community. With a master's in social work under my belt, I channelled my skills and determination into leadership and advisory roles—hoping to make as big of an impact as possible.
🔸 Executive Director at 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐎𝐒, a non-profit social service agency that sought to reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect by building stronger families.
🔸 Sessional Instructor at 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, teaching International Social Work, Intro to Community, Issues in Social Work Supervision, a Master's Field Course, and more.
🔸 Board Chair at the 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬, plus advisory and director roles on multiple boards including child care centres, social justice organizations, and educational institutions.
Once I came to Calgary, I wanted to do more of the same. I quickly found myself serving on the 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐬 board and working with 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐰 as a volunteer in fund development before eventually taking on more senior roles.
🔸 Program Manager at 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞, I was a member of the Senior Leadership Team responsible for leading the HomeBase Housing First Program.
🔸 CEO at 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞, a social profit organization providing a continuum of care to women and their children fleeing domestic violence.
🔸 CEO at 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐲𝐚 (formerly Calgary Family Services), a social profit agency in Calgary dedicated to creating strong families and communities for generations, including support with mental, physical, emotional and financial wellbeing.
🔸 Appointed to the 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞, which reviews all incidents of family violence deaths in Alberta that are related to intimate partner violence. (A survivor of domestic violence myself, this is a cause I am particularly passionate about.)
Above all, I value family, and I cherish each and every moment as a gift. After the loss of my husband to cancer in 2018, my daughter and I moved to Bankview and we now reside in Killarney with our rescue dog Mia and cat Taquito. My daughter recently started university at Mount Royal and since 2012 we've truly made Calgary our home. I am dedicated to my community, my work, and my family.
𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧—it is why I am running for the Ward 8 city council seat.
When I started my career in social work I saw leadership roles as an opportunity to make big, impactful change. I want to be able to do that for Ward 8 and all of Calgary.
